In the past, at this time of year, with all the talk about “new year, new me” and setting resolutions, and becoming a “better” person, I would often forget about simply being the “real me”.
I learned (after many years of failed attempts at grandiose resolutions and goals) that living authentically and on purpose simply requires me to be “me”. I don’t need to hop on the latest fitness trend. I don’t need to become the next social media star. I only need to learn more about who I am, and how I operate best in this world, and go from there.
Here are 5 ways I’ve discovered to be more real:
Stop lying to yourself. Are you really going to write a book, or did someone else’s dream sound good so you felt you needed to do it also? Getting inspiration from others is different than jumping on a bandwagon or trend for the sake of doing something impressive.
Accept who you are. If you’re not an author, artist, musician, or social media influencer, fine! Be you. Do what you love. Do what you’re good at. Do what makes you smile. Knitting, cooking, and building birdhouses are just as impressive hobbies or careers to build.
Get on with it already! If you love to do it, why are you putting it off? If it’s your dream, why haven’t you taken a step toward it? (If you don’t love it or it’s not your dream, see #1)
Drop it. All those old hobbies, jobs, distractions - the ones you’re no longer interested in - drop them. Sell or give away the tools and supplies. Clear your space (physically and energetically) to move forward. It’s ok to change your mind or evolve or lose one interest and gain another. It’s not quitting, but honoring your heart.
Be grateful. Whether you are where you want to be or aren’t yet, be grateful for who you are and all you have done so far in life. If you are alive, breathing, and have the resources to be reading this, you have much to be grateful for.
If you would like to get more real this year, I invite you to explore Human Design. Human Design is about remembering who you are, for real. If you’d like to explore your design and how you operate in the world, let’s chat and see how it might help you find the tools you need to live your most authentic life.
This post is refreshing to read! It’s giving me a lot to think about with a fresh perspective. Thank you!
