Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of The Soul’s Journey!
We’re now into the second quarter of the year, so how are you doing? Are you still hanging on to those resolutions? If so, congratulations! If not, what’s you’re next step?
Last week we began a discussion on purpose. Do you often wonder about your purpose? Are you in the right job, pursuing the right life? Let’s continue that discussion.
🥂 To finding your purpose!

What is your purpose? Why are you here? Who are you? How do you fit into the world?
Our path doesn’t always make sense. It doesn’t have to make sense. And it can feel right without making sense.
Shrek said it best, “Ogres are like onions… you get it? We both have layers!”
We all have layers: our personality types, skills, preferences, strengths, and weaknesses. I mentioned some of the tools to peel back those layers in the last post. Human Design is one of my favorite tools that digs into these layers and how to make sense of them.
What Human Design taught me is that my purpose isn’t in what I do, or even who I am. It’s how I operate as one part of the “big picture”, one moving piece in a dynamic system of everything around me.
My Personal Discovery
When I look back over 50+ years, I’ve tried a lot, explored a lot, succeeded some, and failed some. I’ve been a graphic designer, financial analyst, sales consultant, teacher, business coach, holistic health practitioner, writer, workshop facilitator, mentor, life coach….
None of these defined me, but all of them are me in some way. Each reflects, in its own way, my purpose of supporting, teaching, and guiding creatively. Helping people skip over the challenges I’ve already experienced so they can move forward faster and easier.
I often felt (and still sometimes feel) that I just can’t find the right path. I tried and failed, tried and failed.
But, changing jobs and shifting focus wasn’t an exercise in failing at one thing or another. It wasn’t giving up or not seeing something through. I was simply growing deeper into my purpose, following it wherever it led me. I finally realized, I was living my purpose the entire time. I am still living that purpose: writing, coaching, and sharing Human Design. Where it leads me next, who knows?
I don't think I want to know where it will lead me. That’s part of the excitement, and part of the challenge.
The only place I need to be is right where I am. And the only place you need to be is right where you are.
Why Human Design?
Human Design gives us a glimpse into our strengths and challenges. What we’re inherently good at and where we need to be mindful. It doesn’t tell us which career to pursue. It doesn’t define us. It reveals a game plan to understanding how we fit into the bigger picture and how to operate successfully within our design. It’s simply a tool to help us get out of our heads and into our “me-ness”. (I don’t know if that’s a word, but since I was able to write it and you are able to read it, I say it is).
Your energy type and strategy are the foundational pieces of your personal puzzle. When you learn to make decisions using your primary strategy, the decision making process feels so much smoother. The correct decisions (for you) just make sense and the incorrect ones just feel, well, incorrect.
When you dig deeper into your profile, you’ll see the patterns of your purpose a little clearer. You’ll notice how the events in your life fit together, like a puzzle, with the final picture being revealed as you go.
As you learn about your design, and the designs of others around you, you'll see how and why your interactions with them do (or don't) function properly, and how to adjust perceptions to help you relate better in the future. It’s like learning a language. When you understand that others are speaking a different language, you can learn to communicate better!
When you look back on your life (whether you’re now in your 30s or your 60s) can you see a pattern of underlying purpose? Whether you’ve been an accountant for 40 years or have held five different jobs in 10 years, what purpose do you see in your life that is supported by those?
I’d love to read what you’ve discovered, so please share!
