You started the year with great intentions and new year’s resolutions. Lo and behold, it’s February and you’re still going strong! But, it’s nearing Spring and the squirrels are ready to sabotage your plans.
Which squirrels am I talking about?
The nice weather that can distract you from tending to your goals.
Boredom from the new routine making it less exciting.
Social media addiction and chasing squirrels (or falling down rabbit holes) making procrastination easy.
So how do we keep the squirrels at bay?
Throw them a few nuts. Allow for some down time or a break from the routine without guilting yourself over it. Enjoy a beautiful day by moving your workout from the gym to a walk in the park or sit with your laptop out on the patio instead of your office. Do it consciously knowing that you’ll go back to your regular routine on your next scheduled day.
Shake their tree a little. New routine getting stale or boring? What made it exciting when you first began at the beginning of the year? Change it up a little. Give your routine, and the squirrels, a little shake up. Add a new exercise to your routine or revisit the strategy for your new business. Sometimes goals need a little shaking up to stay fresh.
Banish them (Fill in the rabbit holes). Breaking habits can be harder than making new ones. Turn off the phone or computer at set times, for example: from dinner to bedtime or between end of work and dinner. Delete social apps from your phone. By not engaging with the social squirrels, they will become less of a distraction.
Squirrels can be cute, but distractions from our well laid plans are not. Be prepared for the distractions before they take hold and stay true to your goals.
