Ordinary Time
Ordinary time... the time between significant events. Why isn't every moment significant? Once I write about it, doesn't it become an "event"? Is it then no longer "ordinary"?
We define so much of our lives with time: birthdays, anniversaries, work time vs weekend, countdown to vacation. We mark these specific events as special. But what about all that other time? Do we write off the majority of our lives as insignificant, not special? Just ”ordinary”?
We often look at other people, celebrities especially, as having extraordinary lives. It’s as if we think they don’t have ordinary time. Guess what? They do. We just don’t see those times in the news or on social media.
What if we treated every moment as a significant event? If we celebrated even the most mundane moments as special we wouldn't have time to think about how ”ordinary” our lives were.
Come to think of it, who decided that ordinary was a bad thing anyway? Every moment in time can be extraordinary if we decide it is. When you spend 20 minutes building blocks with your child, that’s extraordinary time. You will never see you child at that time and space of learning and wonder again. When you look up during your commute and notice the beautiful sunrise colors, that is extraordinary. You will never see that specific color pattern again.
What is that one thing that others come to you for over and over? Is it your listening skills or your organizational abilities? Is it a special recipe that everyone wants for their parties? Is it help fixing their electronics? Take a look at your ”ordinary” life through the eyes of others and you'll see what makes you and your life extraordinary.
